Am I a worker, employee, or self-employed?

Employment status determines your rights. This wizard applies the four-factor test (control, mutuality, substitution, financial risk) used by tribunals and courts.

Employment status is decided on the facts, not the contract label. A "self-employed contractor" may legally be a "worker" or "employee" with full rights. If status matters (claiming holiday pay, unfair dismissal, minimum wage), take advice from ACAS (free, 0300 123 1100) or a specialist employment solicitor.

Does the engager tell you how, when, and where to work?

Detailed instructions, fixed hours, mandatory meetings, and a manager who checks your work all point to control.
