About this tool — how it works
This checker asks you to select one of seven immigration or citizenship statuses — British citizen, Irish citizen, EU Settled Status, EU Pre-Settled Status, a current visa, refugee or humanitarian protection status, or an “other/unsure” option — and returns the documents a landlord in England would normally accept for that status, plus which type of check applies. British and Irish citizens and people with Settled Status get a List A, one-off check; visa holders, Pre-Settled Status holders, and refugees get a List B, time-limited check that the landlord must repeat before the status expires; and some EUSS statuses are verified only through the Home Office’s online share-code service rather than a physical document.
The tool matches a status you select to a fixed set of guidance — it does not perform an actual Home Office online check, does not generate or verify a share code, and does not confirm your real immigration status or leave expiry date. For visa holders, it does not check whether your specific visa category carries any renting restrictions.
It covers England only; right to rent checks do not apply in Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland, which have their own separate rules that this tool does not address. What is the difference between a List A and List B check?
A List A check — for British and Irish citizens, and people with EU Settled Status — is done once and never repeated. A List B check applies to time-limited statuses such as a current visa, Pre-Settled Status, or refugee status, and the landlord must carry out a follow-up check before that status expires.
Does the tool carry out the check itself?
No. It only tells you, based on the status you select, which documents are normally accepted and which type of check applies — it does not perform an online Home Office check, generate a share code, or confirm your actual immigration status.
Does this apply if I am renting in Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland?
No. Right to rent checks currently apply in England only, and the tool assumes an England tenancy. Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland have separate rules and this tool does not cover them.
