Can I claim DLA for my child without a diagnosis?

Short answer

Yes. DLA for children is awarded on the care and mobility needs a condition causes, not on the label attached to it. If your child needs substantially more care, supervision or help getting around than other children the same age, you can claim — evidence from professionals helps but a formal diagnosis is not essential.

Disability Living Allowance for children under 16 is not a diagnosis-led benefit. The test is comparative: does your child need substantially more care, supervision or help with getting around than a child of the same age without a disability? A child awaiting assessment for autism, ADHD or a learning disability can qualify while the diagnostic process is still running.

What the two components pay

  • Care component — lowest £30.30, middle £76.70 or highest £114.60 a week. Claimable from birth.
  • Mobility component — lower £30.30 or higher £80.00 a week. The higher rate can be claimed from age three, the lower rate from age five.

The two are assessed independently, so many children receive one and not the other. DLA is tax-free and not means-tested, so your income, savings and work make no difference to entitlement.

Writing the claim so it reflects real life

Awards turn on detail, not diagnosis. Describe the help your child needs across a typical day and night, in time terms: prompting and supervision at mealtimes, help with washing and dressing, managing meltdowns or behavioural incidents, keeping them safe from danger they do not recognise, disturbed nights, and how often you must intervene. Compare it explicitly with what other children of that age need. Supporting letters from a GP, paediatrician, school SENCO or health visitor strengthen the claim, but do not delay applying while you wait for one.

An award often unlocks more than the DLA itself. Middle or highest rate care can bring the disabled child element of Universal Credit, or a disabled child premium in legacy benefits, and can allow a carer to claim Carer’s Allowance. It can also exempt the whole household from the benefit cap.

Two things to watch. You must report changes in your child’s condition — increased needs can justify a supersession to a higher rate, and reduced needs must be reported by law. And when your child turns 16 they are invited to claim PIP instead; treat that as a fresh assessment against different criteria rather than an automatic transfer.

Carer's Allowance

Carer's Allowance is the main state benefit for unpaid carers in the UK. It is worth £86.45 per week (2026/27) and is paid to people who provide at least 35 hours of care per week to someone receiving a qualifying disability benefit. Despite being the main carer benefit, it has a comparatively low rate and strict earnings rules that catch many carers out.
