Which estate administration route applies?

When someone dies, three routes administer the estate: Grant of Probate (with a will), Letters of Administration (no will), or small-estate exemptions for assets below institutional thresholds.

Executors and administrators are personally liable for getting estate administration right. This wizard outlines the right route; consider a probate solicitor for any estate over £100,000, with IHT liability, or with family disagreement.

Is there a valid will?

A valid will is in writing, signed by the deceased in the presence of two witnesses (who also sign). DIY and home-made wills may be valid but more vulnerable to challenge.
